“It’s time to talk: Let’s talk about power sharing and strategizing,”

Newark, NJ – On Sunday, February 21, 2010, from 8 am to 4 pm the 10th Annual New Jersey Conference on Dominican Affairs (CODA) will hold its first state-wide pow-wow about Dominican-Puerto Rican historical relations.  The panel discussion will take place at 11 am at Rutgers School of Law – Center for Law & Justice, 123 Washington Street, Newark, NJ  07102.  

“Dominicans and Puerto Ricans have maintained a long-lasting historical relationship from colonial times to the present and have had to deal with issues of race, history, culture, class, economic development, discrimination and immigration,”  said Dr. Maria Teresa Feliciano, CODA President. “In this forum, presenters will talk about how Dominicans and Puerto Ricans have historically related to each other in dealing with their socio-economic and political realities in New Jersey, Puerto Rico and across the inner city neighborhoods of urban America. It’s time to talk: Let’s talk about power sharing and strategizing.”

Invited panelists include Margarita Muñiz, Newark Deputy Mayor, Prof. Alejandro Benjamin, Bergen Community College, Joe Wiscovich, President, Wiscovich & Associates, Prof. Howard Jordan, Hostos Community College, Rhadames Rivera, Vice President 1199, Martin Perez, President of the NJ Latino Leadership Alliance and Lucilo Santos, President of the Dominican American Association of New Jersey.

The panel will be moderated by Jose Morales, a community activist.

Feliciano. “En este taller, los panelistas hablaran sobre como los Dominicanos y los Puertorriqueños se han relacionado entre si, históricamente y como han tratado sus realidades política y socio-económica en Puerto Rico y las ciudades urbanas en los Estados Unidos. Es hora de que hablemos sobre compartir poder y diseñar estrategias”
